India :

It is a mockery to democracy and polity of India that someone is proposing Infosys’ N.R.Narayana Moorthy as the next President of India. Question raised to Abdul Kalam about Mr.Moorthy’s elevation to occupy the First Citizen’s job may be a soap by Moorthy’s employees, for known or un-known reasons. It might be an attempt to satisfy the Boss. Hope a person like Moorthy would understand such subordinates’ attempt.

Moorthy is a person, well aware of corporate ideology or games or tactics or philosophy, whatever it may be, but that doesn’t mean he is fit for the job of first citizen of a nation like India. He may be fit for some Banana Republics, not for the world’s largest democratic country with diverse culture.

Murthy is a person, just like all good corporate heads who believe in money making, possibly with no hidden ways, till date. He became a corporate or IT magnate in 20 years, that is after the liberalization. Of course, he is good employer, well may be a philanthropist, good human being, businessman with good ethics or good transparent corporate tax payer - these are not enough for the job of Indian President. It is nice that he is spending some money out of his profits for charity also, but that does make sense for neither projecting him as the first citizen of the Nation, nor his wife Sudha Murthy as First Lady.

I am not arguing on Murthy’s recent remarks on Reservation issue or in the fury created over national anthem issue. Murthy’s remarks on ignoring the need for reservation in jobs and studies are far from the India’s grass root problems. He may argue for merit in private equities but that is not the case in government jobs. India is not his cozy Bangalore hubs. Mr.Murthy may be an idol to middle class men/middlemen or at least to his subordinates or PR journos. Corporate leaders are not common man’s leaders.

President of India’s seat should be for statesman with exemplary qualities and vision, though some who occupied previously did not have it.

Mr. Kalam remarked that selection of Murthy as next president is a fantastic idea. Abdul Kalam is a nice person and made his remarks cleverly or tactfully to avoid an embarrassing situation at latter’s Campus. Kalam’s answer shows his nobility or innocence, but it does not mean Mr.Murthy is fit for that job. Mr.Murthy is so young in business and he may continue to act on business very heavily and free to make comments on anything under or above the sun. Let some Statesman come to occupy the Raisina Hills after July 2007.
